University Faculty/Staff

NCAA rules are the responsibility of everyone from student-athletes to university faculty/staff members, coaches, and boosters.

The following pages are meant to help faculty and staff understand NCAA rules pertaining to student-athletes who they may have in their classes or interact with on campus.

It is important to understand that as an employee of Duquesne University, the NCAA considers you a "booster" of the athletic department.

Please feel free to review the information provided on this website. It has been designed to help educate you on some basic NCAA rules and principles. If at any point, you have a question, please feel free to contact the Compliance office.

Institutional Control

Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental requirement of NCAA Legislation. Specifically, each institution shall be responsible for:

  • Controlling its intercollegiate athletics program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Association
  • Monitoring its program to ensure compliance, identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and taking appropriate corrective actions.

Rules compliance must be a collective institutional responsibility. Certainly, the compliance responsibilities of the athletic department are substantial, but the institution must recognize the important role that other departments and administrators play throughout the institution.
