Two Dukes Named A-10 Rookies of the Week

Duquesne University's Ashley Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Schenley) and Jackie Hughes (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) have named the Atlantic 10's Rookies of the Week for track & field and tennis respectively. It is the first weekly honor this spring for both.

Smith ran the leadoff leg for the Dukes in both the 4 x 400 and 4 x 100 meter relays that placed first and second respectively at the Western PA Intercollegiate Championships this past weekend at Carnie Mellon University. Dukes crossed the line in 4:02.04 in the 4 x 400 and posted a time of 49.60 in the 4 x 100. Smith also placed first in the 400m hurdles with her time of 1:07.52 en route to the Dukes taking second of 14 squads with a team score of 164.

Duquesne's next meet is the University of Virginia Invitational this Saturday, April 10.

Freshman Jackie Hughes

Hughes went 2-0 in the Dukes 7-0 victory at St. Bonaventure this past Friday. She won the No. 3 singles rebounding from a 0-6 loss in the opening set to take a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. Hughes also recorded an 8-0 third doubles win. She is 10-2 in singles this spring and owns an 18-2 record in singles play on the year.

The Dukes are 5-8 this spring and host Youngstown State on Tuesday, April 6, beginning at 1:00 pm at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, PA.
