Kat McNish and Jason Duty Named 2010 Duquesne Student-Athletes of the Year
April 28, 2010 Lacrosse attack Kat McNish and basketball guard Jason Duty were named Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year at the annual Duquesne Athletics Senior Luncheon held this afternoon at the Duquesne Union. In addition, the lacrosse team was named winner of the Dukes Cup presented annually to the team that demonstrates outstanding service, support and participation in the Duquesne University community. McNish, a graduate student with a 4.0 GPA in reading and language arts, was the 2008 Atlantic 10 lacrosse Student-Athlete of the Year. A two-time first team all-conference and academic all-conference pick, McNish had a 3.67 GPA in elementary education as an undergrad. The Caldwell, N.J. native was a four-year board member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She also served as Duquesne's Atlantic 10 SAAC representative for two years. In addition, she coordinated DU's annual UPMC Children's Hospital Toy Drive and was a team leader at the WPIAL Summit on Sportsmanship. Duty, an accounting major with a 3.73 GPA, was a two-time member of the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. He was also just the fourth men's basketball player in school history to earn ESPN The Magazine All-District 2 academic honors two times. On the floor, Duty worked his way up from a non-scholarship freshman to a full scholarship team leader as a senior. He played in 110 career games with 75 starts. The Cranberry, Township, Pa. native finished tenth on DU's career list with 123 career 3-pointers. Duty was a Natural Leader as a member of a student-athlete peer-mentoring group. He organized an on-campus non-alcoholic tailgate in the spring of 2009 in conjunction with residence life as an alternative gathering for students. Off campus, he traveled with his teammates and coaching staff to conduct a basketball clinic at the Woodlands Foundation in Wexford, Pa. last summer. The nonprofit Woodlands Foundation was created with the mission of enriching the lives of children and adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses in western Pennsylvania. The Student-Athletes of the Year were selected by a panel of University and Athletics Department administrators. |
