Duquesne Sports Hall of Fame to Welcome Three New Members

The Merle E. Gilliand Duquesne University Sports Hall of Fame will welcome three new members during ceremonies to be held Friday, Dec. 9. Established in 1963, the Hall of Fame honors more than 250 athletes, coaches and builders for exceptional achievement across the more than 100 years of Duquesne intercollegiate athletics. The 2011-12 enshrinement class includes:

Ryan Bender: Bender ran cross country for the Dukes from 2001-2004. A four-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference honoree and three-time Academic All-America, he set school records in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter events. He is the first cross country athlete to enter Duquesne's Hall of Fame. A 2007 graduate of the Mylan School of Pharmacy, Bender resides in Indiana, Pa.

Ginger Flocco (2002-05)


Ginger Flocco: Lacrosse player Flocco is also the first athlete from her sport to enter Duquesne's Sports Hall of Fame. Between 2002 and 2005, she was a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference honoree and set school records in game winning goals and draw controls. Flocco finished her Duquesne career among the top five in school history in nine statistical categories. A 2005 graduate of Duquesne's School of Education, she now resides in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

Tony Zimmerman (1998-2000)


Tony Zimmerman: Quarterback of Duquesne's football team from 1998-2000, Zimmerman passed for 7,313 yards and 73 touchdowns before embarking on a four-season career in professional arena football. At Duquesne, he set 14 school records and the NCAA Division I-AA record for highest touchdown pass percentage. A resident of New Kensington and 2001 graduate of the School of Education, he served as receivers coach for the Dukes from 2005-2006.

The Merle E. Gilliand Duquesne University Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet, presented by The Academy Schools, will be held on Friday, Dec 9., 2011 at the Power Center Ballroom on the university's campus. A cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. and the enshrinement ceremony following. Tickets are $50 per person.
