Hall of Fame Weekend Events a Success

Nov. 5, 2009

The Duquesne Athletic Fund recently hosted a football alumni reunion as well as induction ceremonies for three individuals into the Sports Hall of Fame. All three inductees and their friends and family were in attendance as well as over 30 former football players dating back to the 1960's.

Hall of Fame Induction
A dinner was hosted by the DAF on Friday, Oct. 30 in the Power Center Ballroom to induct Leigh Bodden (Football '02), Candace Futrell (Basketball '04) and Damien Pottinger (Soccer '03) into the Hall of Fame. The event, which was sponsored by The Academy Schools, had over 130 attendees.

After opening statements by Director of Athletics Greg Amodio and University President Charles J. Dougherty, each of the three inductees spoke for a few moments after receiving a commemorative framed portrait.

Bodden thanked his mother and his coaches from when he played and said he was glad to be back at Duquesne. He said his experience at Duquesne helped prepare him for professional football.

Futrell thanked her coaches as well as the athletics department staff. She said she was excited to be back at Duquesne and credited her parents for keeping her grounded and on track.

Pottinger was also thankful to the athletics staff and the academic support staff and said he was having a great time during the event. He also jokingly asked why the Power Center wasn't built when he was at Duquesne.

The trio and their families were also welcomed at a breakfast Saturday morning in the Hall of Fame room in the Palumbo Center and were later honored at halftime of the Duquesne football game versus Wagner.

Football Alumni Reunion
Over 30 former Duquesne football players dating back to the 1960's were back on campus over the weekend. Several attended Friday's Hall of Fame dinner, were guests at the Straub Beer Pre-Game Tailgate and were honored at halftime of the football game as well.

Hall of Fame Membership Criteria
To be nominated and considered for induction into Duquesne's Sports Hall of Fame, candidates must have been enrolled for at least one full year in one of Duquesne's schools, competed for at least one full season in a sport at Duquesne and completed their career at the University a minimum of five years before their time of nomination. In addition to athletes, the selection committee will also consider nominees who have made significant contributions to the Athletics Department in non-playing capacities.
