John Welday is in his fifth season as head strength and conditioning coach for the Department of Athletics. Welday, who coordinates the year-round conditioning programs for the department, also oversees the staff in the newly-renovated athletics weight room in the Palumbo Center.

Welday came to Duquesne after serving as strength and conditioning coach for the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins from 1989 to 2005. He worked with a pair of Stanley Cup championship teams (1991 & 1992) during his 17 years with the Pens.

The Toronto, Ohio native was a standout prep offensive lineman who attended Penn State on a football scholarship before suffering a career-ending injury. He worked on the strength and conditioning staff at PSU prior accepting the head strength position at Dartmouth where he worked from 1984-89.

Welday completed his undergraduate degree in kinesiology at Penn State in 1981. Welday and his wife, Jodi, reside in Toronto, Ohio. They have two children, son Jared and daughter Jordan.
