What is a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee? (SAAC)
SAAC is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The purpose of this Student Athlete Advisory Committee is to
1. Encourage more student-athlete involvement in campus and community projects, as well as leadership and development.
2. Serve as a liaison between student-athletes and the Athletic Department and Administration
3. Promote better communication and interaction between the members of the Duquesne University Intercollegiate Athletics teams, and emphasize communication to improve the overall athletic program
SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses. The network of SAACs, from individual campus committees to the conference and/or national committees, interact and support one another to shape intercollegiate athletics policy and enhance the student-athlete experience.
What has the Duquesne SAAC done?
Here are a few things that SAAC has done this past year:
Window Painting - Student athletes went to the local children's hospital of Pittsburgh and painted artwork for the patients to enjoy.
Christmas Toy Drive -Student Athletes collected toys for less fortunate children at Christmas time.
Christmas Party for community children -Children from the community were invited to do arts and crafts, listen to Christmas music, and play holiday themed games with the Duquesne student athletes at Christmas time.
Student athlete social -SAAC sponsored a social for all student athletes, administration and staff. The event was held on National Student Athlete Day (April 6th 2005). There was a DJ, games, and door prizes. There was delicious food donated from Jimmy John's and Chick-Fil-A. The social helped raise money for Variety- The children's Charity of Pittsburgh.
GMAC financial seminar -Representatives from GMAC came to give student athletes advice on credit and financial services.
