Dave Cramer is set to begin his 28th season as the Duquesne University rifle coach, giving him the longest tenure of any coach or administrator in the Department of Athletics. He began coaching in 1974 and has turned the team, which was close to extinction, into a consistent winning program. In fact, under Cramer's guidance, the Dukes were ranked by the NCAA Rifle Coaches Association as the number 17 team in the nation in 1996. He has also produced two individuals who qualified for the NCAA Rifle Championships; Dan Francis in 1990 and Jacob Bunch in 1995.

Cramer is a native of Pennsylvania, raised near Indiana, PA and is a graduate of Indiana University of PA. The highlight of his successful collegiate career was being named a 1963 NRA Intercollegiate All-American for the IUP rifle team. After a Vietnam tour with the United States Army, he was stationed at the Army Marksmanship Training Unit in Ft. Benning, GA and trained in international types of rifle competition with the Army teams.

He remained in the US Army Reserve Program after leaving active duty, continuing to shoot for US Army Reserve teams and United States teams. During the next few years, Cramer was an elite shooter on numerous national championship teams and two Pan American Games teams. Representing the U.S.A., he earned one gold, three silver and one bronze medals in World Championship and Pan American Games competition in 1974, 1975 and 1979.

In 1967 and 1977, Cramer was the National Indoor Conventional Rifle Champion and in 1975 was the National and International Air Rifle Champion. He also holds numerous national records, both team and individual. Since retirement from the reserves in 1994, Cramer has continued his competitive shooting, but on a more recreational level. He is still an active shooter in local rifle leagues and national competitions.

Since leaving the Army in 1969, Cramer has been employed by Hopewell Area High School as a biology teacher. He and his wife Alice reside in Hopewell Township, PA. Their daughter Jannell is a recent Duquesne graduate.
