Dukes Drop DH to Fordham on Crispy, Cold April Saturday
April 7, 2007
Bronx, N.Y. - Duquesne University's baseball team dropped a pair of games to Fordham at Houlihan Park at Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx, N.Y. on a cold April 7th where the temperature struggled to reach 40 degrees. The wind chill never did.
After a bases-loaded walk got the Dukes within one, Fordham's Peter Kennelly got the final two outs in the ninth to preserve a 3-2 victory in the opening game on Saturday.
In the second game, the Rams scored an insurance run in the sixth to gather a 4-2 lead. DU's Michael Dukovich and Kennelly gave up just two combined hits over the last three innings to keep the score right where it was.
Aaron Janusey and Derek Mechling each drove in one run in both games. No Duquesne player had a multi-hit game though Rich Goulian (4-1-3-0) and Danny Leach (4-1-2-1) did achieve that feat in the opener.
Duquesne's Gary Pierpont (2-2) was charged with the loss in the opener and Keith Meyer (1-1), who started his first game after 12 relief appearances and struck out three in as many innings, picked up the loss in the nightcap.
Javier Martinez (5-2) was the winner in game one and Tom Davis (5-0) won the second to remain unbeaten on the season. The Rams raised their Atlantic 10 Conference mark to 7-2; FU is 16-11 overall.
Duquesne (12-15, 4-5 A-10) takes a break from A-10 play with a pair of non-conference games next week. The Dukes host Ohio (10-15) on Duquesne Field in Green Tree, Pa. on Tuesday, April 10th at 3:00 p.m. and then match up against cross-town rival Pittsburgh (13-14) the next day, Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at the neutral-site Falconi Field in Washington, Pa.
