Dukes Ground Hawks in Game One of Series, 10-5

Matt Carson hit his first home run of the season and Robert Corsi made his first collegiate start on the mound as Duquesne won its third straight Atlantic 10 game with a 10-5 victory over visiting Saint Joseph's Friday afternoon on Duquesne Field. The Dukes improve to 3-4 in A-10 play while the Hawks fall to 4-3.
Carson had hits in his first three at bats, including his three-run round-tripper in the second inning which gave Duquesne a 3-0 lead. The Dukes extended their lead to 6-0 as Rick Devereaux doubled and scored in the third inning and Derek Lefever and Anthony DeFabio had hits and scored in the fourth.
St. Joe's crept back into the game with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to make it 6-4, but the Red and Blue posted four insurance runs in the eighth to take the win. DeFabio had two hits and two RBI in the game as did Chris Kimmeth.
Corsi tossed the first four innings, a season high, holding SJU to just one hit while stiking out four. Grant Gillespie tossed three innings, allowing one run while striking out four to earn his second win of the season.
Game two of the series will be played Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
