Ninth Inning Rally Gives Dukes Win

April 18, 2006

Box Score

Green Tree, Pa. - Duquesne University's baseball team ended a seven-game losing streak with an 11-10 win over Geneva College, Tuesday at Duquesne Field. Freshman Brian Bernardo's one-out single in the ninth drove in classmate Anthony Manley to give the Dukes' a come-from-behind victory.

The Dukes were led by Bernardo, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, and sophomores Nolan Pena, 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, Eric Morrison, 3-for-5, and Derek Mechling, 2-for-3 with three RBI. Freshman Brian Schwartzbauer (1-2), who pitched the final three innings including a scoreless eighth and ninth, picked up his first win as a Duke.

Down 2-0, the Dukes scored three in the bottom of the third to grab their first lead, 3-2. Each team scored three in the fourth with Duquesne putting up another three in the fifth for a 9-5 edge.

Geneva answered with three in the sixth and two in the seventh to retake the lead, 10-9.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pena's single drove in another soph, Pat Kimutis, to tie the score at 10-10. That setup up DU's rally in their last scheduled at-bat.

Geneva (24-14) was led by Mike Bruno, who was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI, and Rob Arata, who went 3-for-5, scored one run and drove in five. Justin Montgomery (2-1) picked up his first loss.

Duquesne (8-26) meets another Western Pa. NAIA team tomorrow, Wednesday, April 19, 2006, when Seton Hill (25-16) takes on the Red and Blue at 4:00 p.m. on Duquesne Field in the Pittsburgh suburbs. The Griffins are riding a seven-game winning streak.
