May 20, 2006

Box Score

The Duquesne University baseball season came to an abrupt ending Saturday afternoon as the Dukes fell to visiting George Washington, 5-4 at Duquesne Field. With two outs in the top of the ninth and the Dukes leading 3-2, the Colonials hit back-to-back singles before launching a three-run home run to give GW a lead they would not relinquish. The winner of the game was guaranteed the sixth-seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship.

The Dukes managed just five hits off Colonials pitching but took advantage of six walks to score their first three runs. Senior Steve Maiolo was 1-2 with two walks and two runs scored. His ninth inning single gave him 213 career hits, tying him with Bernie Weber for the school record. Junior Jeff Naughton pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out six.
