DAN SCHWARTZBAUER

Duquesne alum Dan Schwartzbauer enters his second season with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. The Shaler HS alum is on the 2005 Hickory Crawdads Class A roster

Schwartzbauer was selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball draft by the hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates picked Schwartzbauer in the 41st round of this year's draft, the third Duke drafted by the MLB hometeam (Joe Beimel, B.J. Barns).

He was assigned to the split-season Bradenton Pirates of the Gulf Coast League where he was the team and league leader in batting average. Although he didn't make the league leader list (short 23 at bats), he posted a .366 average, going 45-123 in 35 games. He also led the team with 24 RBI and 13 walks. Dan was among the team leaders in runs (23) and doubles (9).

In his senior collegiate season, Schwartzbauer led the Dukes with 41 runs scored, was second with a .329 batting average and had a .404 on-base percentage as Duquesne's leadoff hitter. He also led DU, and was second in the Atlantic 10 Conference, with a perfect 22 stolen bases on 22 attempts. The Western Pennsylvania native was eighth in the league with 26 double plays and 10th with 112 assists. Schwartzbauer finished his career with a .296 batting average, 166 runs scored, 79 stolen bases and 44 walks.
