KINGSTON, RI - Ovie Soko went over the 1,000 career-point mark in posting a 19-12 double-double and freshman L.G. Gill came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points to lead Duquesne to an 83-71 win at Rhode Island.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Dukes (11-13, 3-8), while the loss was the fifth in a row for the Rams (11-15, 2-9) who were led by freshman E.C. Matthews' game-high 32 points.
Duquesne led by five before Gill, who went 7-of-8 from the field - including 5-of-6 from 3-point - hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to make it 67-57 with 7:11 left.
Gill, who had never hit more than two 3-pointers in a game, drilled his fifth 3-pointer with 5:40 remaining to push the lead back to 10. The Rams cut it to seven with 2:12 on the clock and the Dukes responded with a 6-1 run that featured four free throws by Derrick Colter sandwiched around a bucket by Soko.
Duquesne outshot the Rhode Island .566 to .533. The DU bench, led by Gill and 8 points from fellow freshman Desmond Ridenour, outscored the URI bench 30-2.
Rhode Island jumped out to a 15-8 lead as the Dukes missed 10 of their first 13 shots. Soko, who had 15 in the first half, ignited a 23-4 run with a three-point play. Gill, who had a 3-pointer and dunk during the run, capped it with another three that made it 31-19 with 4:43 left.
Matthews scored 10 of URI's next 12 points to help the Rams pull within two.
Ridenour hit a layup at the first half horn to make it 42-34.
Duquesne heads to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised by SNY. The game, which will air locally on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh, will also be streamed live by CampusInsiders.com.
This was Ovie Soko's sixth double-double (19-12) of the season (17th of his career) ... it was his second in A-10 play ... the 12 boards were his most since Dec. 17 at Saint Francis, Pa. (also 12)... Soko who scored 564 points in three seasons at UAB prior to transferring, reached the 1,000-point career mark on the second of two free throws with 1:55 left in the first half ... Soko's career point total stands at 1,006.
Gill, who went 5-of-6 from the 3-point arc, entered the game 10-of-45 from 3-poiunt for the season ... Gill's previous career high was 7 points (four times with the last coming against George Mason on Feb. 8) ... Gill scored 8 in the first half.
Gill and fellow freshman Desmond Ridenour were a combined 11-of-13 in scoring 27 points off the bench ... Ridenour (4-5, 8 pts.) & Gill (7-8, 19 pts.).
The 12-point margin of victory was DU's largest in the series since a 72-55 win at Ryan Center on Jan. 21, 2004 ... the Dukes have won four of the past eight in Kingston, R.I.
All nine Dukes who played had at least one assist.
Duquesne's ,566 shooting performance was its third-best of the season and best since shooting a season-high .623 at UMass Lowell on Dec. 21.
Rhode Island's largest lead was seven (15-8) with 11:46 left in the first half ... Duquesne's largest was .13 (82-69) with 36 seconds left.
Duquesne led from the 9:02 mark of the first half on.
Micah Mason, who entered the game as the nation's leading 3-point shooter (.583), went 1-of-2 from the arc in scoring 5 points.
Duquesne, which plays four of its final six regular-season games on the road, heads to Olean, N.Y. to face St.Bonaventure on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised by SNY and ROOT Sports Pittsburgh. It will also be streamed live by CampusInsiders.com.
