Feb. 15, 2017
PITTSBURGH - Mike Lewis II scored a game-high 31 points - one shy of the Duquesne freshman record - and fellow freshman Isiaha Mike added 23 as the Dukes snapped an eight-game losing streak with a resounding 96-66 win over Massachusetts at Palumbo Center.
The 30-point margin of victory tied Duquesne's fifth-largest in Atlantic history.
Lewis II, who missed his first six shots, made his final eight in tying Wayne Smith for second-most points by a DU freshman. Lewis II, who went to the bench with 6:14 left, finished 6-of-7 from the 3-point arc.
Mike, who went 5-of-5 from 3-point, added eight rebounds and three steals in 22 minutes.
Duquesne, which led for all but 33 seconds of the first half, built a pair of 10-point leads before Lewis II buried a 3-pointer to make it 42-29 with three minutes left. The lead briefly reached 15 before a UMass 3-pointer made it 46-34. Lewis II then hit a driving layup with under seven seconds left, stole the inbounds pass between the top of the key and midcourt and in one motion banked in a one-handed 3-pointer at the horn to make it 51-34.
Lewis II, who scored 16 points in the last three minutes of the first half and first three of the second, added two more 3-pointers before giving the Dukes a 61-39 lead on a pair of free throws at the 17:01 mark.
Duquesne steadily built the lead to a high of 42 (92-50) with 4:51 left.
The Dukes, who shot an even 50 percent in each half, finished 14-of-26 from 3-point. DU's 23 assists on its 32 field goals were a season high.
DU held UMass to 38.7 percent shooting.
Duquesne returns to action on Sunday at Noon vs. George Washington at Palumbo Center. The game will be televised nationally by NBCSN. In addition to being Duquesne's annual "RED OUT," DU is offering any two seats in the house for $19 for the 2/19 game.
