Dukes Coast to 100-53 Exhibition Win over La Roche
Oct. 30, 2010
PITTSBURGH - Bill Clark scored 18 of his team-high 26 points in the first half as Duquesne used an 18-0 run in the opening 20 minutes to pull away for a 100-53 win over Division III La Roche in its exhibition opener at the Palumbo Center.
Clark hit 5-of-5 3-point attempts in going 10-of-11 from the field. He had 25 points with over 11 minutes to go in the game.
Freshman T.J. McConnell was one steal shy of a triple-double with 12 points, 10 assists and nine steals in 24 minutes. Freshman Joel Wright (15 points), B.J. Monteiro (12 points) and Sean Johnson (10 points) also scored in double digits for the Dukes.
Wright had a game-high nine rebounds and Clark and Rodrigo Peggau added seven boards each for DU.
Duquesne, which shot 26.1 percent from the 3-point arc last season, converted 10-of-24 3-point attempts. Four players hit at least one three for the Dukes who assisted on 29 of 39 field goals.
"I liked the way we got open shots, especially early in the game," said head coach Ron Everhart. "I thought Billy was tremendous. He's focused and prepared to have the kind of senior year I think he should have."
The Dukes outscored the Redhawks 30-3 off turnovers in the first half and 51-9 for the game. La Roche, which competes in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, was held without a field goal for a span of 6:08 during Duquesne's 18-0 run.
La Roche had 20 turnovers in the first half and 39 for the game.
Nate Wojciechowski scored eight points for La Roche, which had just three players taller than 6-4 on its roster.
Duquesne took its first 40-point lead on a Clark layup with 11:56 left. The Dukes reached the century mark on Wright free throw with 14 seconds left.
Duquesne concludes the exhibition season on Nov. 8 at home against Lycoming. DU opens the regular season at the Palumbo Center versus Bluefield State on Saturday, Nov. 13.
