Dukes Down Carnegie Mellon, 74-48, in Exhibition Opener
Nov. 1, 2012
PITTSBURGH - Duquesne tipped off the Jim Ferry Era by holding Division III Carnegie Mellon to 25 percent shooting in a 74-48 exhibition win at the Palumbo Center.
Duquesne, which ranked 337th of 338 schools in rebound margin last season, outrebounded the Tartans 56-34. Marhold and P.J. Torres led the way with seven boards each.
Eleven players scored for the Dukes who shot 46.3 percent.
CMU hit three 3-pointers in jumping out to a 13-9 lead before Duquesne clamped down defensively and outscored the Tartans 30-5 over the final 12:16 to take a 39-18 lead at the half.
DU scored 15 consecutive points during the run, which saw Carnegie Mellon miss 13 consecutive shots. Nine players scored in the opening 20 minutes for the Dukes.
Duquesne, which turned it over 10 times in the first 11:10, had 12 turnovers at the half and 19 for the game.
"I thought we did a horrendous job of taking care of the basketball," said Ferry, who was named Duquesne's head coach in April. "I didn't think we played very well offensively at all. Defensively I thought we played in spurts. It was good, we needed this because I think it showed some glaring weaknesses we really need to work on."
Pantophlet hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the second half to build the lead to 29. Duquesne maintained at least a 30 point lead until the final two minutes. Duquesne's largest lead was 39 points with 9:14 left.
Torres scored seven of his nine points in the second half for DU.
"I didn't think anybody played exceptionally well. P.J. gave us a spurt. Andre Marhold played pretty well doing what he does. It was nice to see that. I thought Jeremiah Jones - at times - played well in spurts. But I don't think anybody played well. We're 16 practices in so we need this stuff. We need to see what we need to do to get better. We need to get better in practice and we need to get better in the next exhibition game because next Friday it all counts."
Duquesne concludes the exhibition portion of the 2012-13 schedule against Hawaii Hilo on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. DU opens the regular season at Albany on Friday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
