@DuqMBB Comeback Falls Short Versus Pitt
Dec. 1, 2017
Ryan Luther led four Panthers (4-4) in double figures with 16.
The Dukes (2-3), who were outshot 53.6 percent to 39.7 percent, cut an 11-point Pitt lead to two with 12:55 remaining, but could not get over the hump as the Panthers pulled away late for the final margin.
Pitt, which led 37-26 at the half, was up 39-28 when Williams Jr. began Duquesne's comeback with a 3-pointer.
Nicholas Kratholm, who had attempted five shots in four games, came off the bench to add two more 3-pointers, the second of which made it a five-point game. Williams Jr., who scored seven in just over three minutes, made it 47-45 on a jumper at the 12:55 mark.
The Dukes trailed 52-49 following a Kellon Taylor layup before Pitt responded with a 6-0 run.
The Dukes went nearly four minutes without a bucket before Tydus Verhoeven hit a layup to make it 58-51 with 7:11 left.
DU would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
DU opened the game 3-of-13 as Pitt jumped out to a 12-point lead. It was then that Lewis II caught fire, hitting three-straight shots - including a pair of 3-pointers - before finding Jordan Robinson for a dunk that made it 30-23.
The Dukes got to within six on a Williams Jr. free throw, before Pitt got the lead back to double-digits on a Luther 3-pointer.
Duquesne returns to action on Monday, Dec. 4 against Maryland Eastern Shore at 7:00 p.m. at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Mike Lewis II went 4-of-12 from the 3-point arc in posting his 11th career 20-point game ... it was his second 20-point outing this season (he had 22 vs. VMI on Nov. 14).
Kellon Taylor came off the bench to tie his career high with eight points to go along with a career-best eight rebounds in 18 minutes ... Taylor, who doubles as a receiver for Duquesne's FCS football team, rejoined the basketball team on Nov. 19 ... this was his second game back.
First-year graduate transfer F/C Chas Brown made his Duquesne debut - and first start as a Duke ... Brown, who started all 18 games he played at Coppin State last season, missed the first four games with a foot injury ... Brown finished with three rebounds in five minutes.
Duquesne finished with nine assists and 11 turnovers, while Pitt had 19 and eight.
The Panthers outscored the Dukes 42-28 in the paint, while DU had a 20-13 advantage in second chance points.
Duquesne's lone lead came at 2-0 with 17:57 left in the first half ... Pitt's largest lead was 14, at 76-62 with :20 left ... Duquesne led for 0:24 and Pitt led for 37:32 ... the game was tied for 2:04.
