KALAMAZOO, MICH. - Nate Hutcheson and Brandon Pokely both posted career highs as Western Michigan shot 54 percent in defeating Duquesne 85-71 at University Arena.

Hutcheson finished with 24 and Pokely, whose previous career-best was six, finished with 16 as WMU kept its home record unblemished at 3-0 in upping its overall record to 3-7.

Michigan native Mike Talley led the Dukes (6-5) with a season-high 16 points. Sean Johnson had 15 and B.J. Monteiro added 13 for DU which shot 44.6 percent, including 6-of-24 from the 3-point arc. T.J. McConnell had seven assists and five steals in a losing effort.

Hutcheson and Pokely combined for six of WMU's season-high 10 3-pointers. Demetrius Ward, who scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half, added three field goals from beyond the arc.

The Dukes, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead, went nearly seven minutes without a field goal as Western Michigan used an 18-3 run to turn an 8-3 deficit into a 21-11 lead. Ward hit two 3-pointers during the run.

The Dukes briefly cut it to six on a McConnell 3-pointer before the Broncos answered with a 17-4 run to take their largest lead of the half at 44-25 with a minute left.

"I didn't like our effort in the first half." said Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart whose Dukes dropped to 0-3 on the road. "We looked like we were a step slow and a little flat."

WMU took its largest lead of the game at 61-41 on a Hutcheson 3-pointer with 12:15 left. The Dukes rallied to cut to 11 on a Kadeem Pantophlet 3-pointer before Pokely hit yet another 3-pointer to give Western Michigan a 14-point lead with 5:03 remaining.

"They shot the ball extremely well," said Everhart. "Every time it seemed as though we could get back in it, they'd grab a rebound or find the open man and hit shots. We just couldn't make a shot ... and we had our share of good ones."

Duquesne heads to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason (7-3) on Wednesday, Dec. 21. The George Mason game, which will be televised by MASN, will be the Dukes' last game before breaking for Christmas.
