Monteiro Helps Dukes Past Fordham, 77-67
B.J. Monteiro scored 23 of his career-high 30 points in the first half, as Duquesne withstood a second half Fordham rally to defeat the Rams, 77-67, at Palumbo Center.
True freshmen Derrick Colter (30.1), Jeremiah Jones (23.1) and Quevyn Winters (21.4) are averaging over 20 minutes per game ... the threesome - who rank second, fifth and third on the team in scoring - is accounting for just under 42 percent of DU's points.
Duquesne is 6-2 when scoring 70 or more, 5-1 when leading at the half and 5-0 when leading with 5:00 left ... in an oddity of sorts, the Dukes are 2-4 when holding opponents under 70 points and 2-2 when holding opponents under 40 percent from the floor.
Duquesne was picked to finish 16th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. Duquesne, George Washington and St. Bonaventure are the only teams who did not place a player on any of the Atlantic 10 preseason teams (First, Second, Third, Defensive or Rookie).
DU's non-conference schedule was ranked as tied for fifth-toughest in the A-10 by ESPN's Andy Katz. Butler & Temple were a 9 (on a 10-pt scale), Xavier & Richmond an 8 and Duquesne & VCU a 7.

Fordham continues to show steady improvement under third-year head coach Tom Pecora ... Pecora, who led Hofstra to four 20-win seasons in his previous stint, took over a 2-26 Fordham team and finished with seven wins in 2011 and upped that total to 10 last season ... the Rams are 2-1 at home with wins over Siena (81-75) and Monmouth (82-71) ... Fordham has one of the Atlantic 10's top big men in 6-7, 231-pound senior forward Chris Gaston (14.1, 7.1) ... Gaston, a preseason first team all-conference pick, is bidding to become just the second person in A-10 history to lead the league in rebounding for four consecutive years (Xavier's David West is the other) .. the Union City, N.J. native missed six games after undergoing arthoscopic knee surgery on Nov. 16 ... he made his return on Dec. 15 vs. Princeton ... junior guard Branden Frazier is averaging a team-high 15.7 ppg. ... he also leads the team wtih 77 assists and is tied for team high with 15 steals.
PENN STATE LEFTOVERS
Notes from Duquesne's 84-74 loss at Penn State on Dec. 29 ... the Dukes, who trailed by 22 (66-44) with 9:52 left, rallied to cut it to five on a Quevyn Winters 3-pointer with 56 seconds left, but couldn't pull any closer as PSU hit 5-of-8 free throws over the last 39 seconds ... Sean Johnson (19 points), Winters (14 points) and Derrick Colter (13 points) led the way for DU ... Johnson & Colter, who had three points on 1-of-8 shooting in the first half, combined for 29 of DU's 46 second half points ... there were 54 fouls called and 65 free throws attempted between the two teams ... four Dukes and two Nittany Lions fouled out ... there were 53 free throw attempts in the second half alone ... PSU went 26-of-36 from the line for the game, DU was 21-of-29 ... Penn State outrebounded Duquesne 50-28 ... the -22 was DU's largest rebounding deficit of the season ... PSU had a 23-7 advantage in second-chance points ... Nick Colella, a career 25 percent 3-point shooter, hit 5-of-7 from the arc in scoring a career high 15 points in 24 minutes for PSU.
