Duquesne Men Put Six-Game Win Streak on the Line at La Salle

DUKES TAKE SIX-GAME WIN STREAK TO LA SALLE: Duquesne (11-5, 3-0), coming off a 78-66 win over No. 19 (AP)/23 (ESPN) Temple, puts its six-game win streak on the line at La Salle (8-10, 0-3) on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7:00 p.m. The Dukes, who have beaten Saint Joseph's and Temple in the same season for the first time since 1992, are looking for their first sweep of the Atlantic 10's three Philadelphia schools. DU is also looking for the first 4-0 conference start in school history. Duquesne, whose win streak is the longest current among A-10 schools, is 4-2 on the road. La Salle, which is coming off a 74-71 loss at UMass, is 6-6 at Tom Gola Arena. The Dukes (80.8 ppg.) and Explorers (77.9 ppg.) rank first and second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring. DU is limiting its A-10 opponents to 58.0 ppg. on .348 shooting. The Dukes have held each of their first three league foes to at least one sub-30 point half (Saint Joe's had 26 in the first half, Saint Louis scored 25 and 20 points in two halves and Temple had 23 in the first). DU held Saint Louis without a field goal for a 14:01 span covering both halves and Temple did not record a field goal until the 8:18 mark of the first half on Saturday. Duquesne has led at the half of 15 of 16 games and enjoyed at least a seven-point lead at some point in every game this season. All 11 of DU's wins have been by double-digit margins. This is the first time since 1971 that the Dukes have opened the month of January with five-straight wins.
DUQUESNE LATELY: Senior preseason All-A10 pick Damian Saunders, who will be making his 101st career start at La Salle, became DU's all-time blocked shot and career steals leader in December ... the 6-7 Connecticut native has 259 career blocks (old record of 229 was set by Derrick Alston from 1991-94) and 233 steals (old record 218 by Kenya Hunter from 1993-96) ... Saunders ranks 21st on DU's all-time scoring list with 1,302 points ... he needs nine rebounds to pass Lionel Billingy (893 from 1972-74) and move into the fourth spot on the all-time rebound list (Saunders has 887) ... senior Bill Clark, who has hit five or more 3-pointers in a game four times, leads DU at 16.9 ppg. ... THE SERIES: La Salle leads the overall series 36-29, including a 22-9 advantage in games played at Philadelphia ... Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart, who owns three of the nine wins in Philly, has yet to lose to the Explorers at Tom Gola Arena ... two years ago, DU got 22 points and 14 rebounds from Damian Saunders in a 79-68 road win ... in 2008, Kieron Achara scored 21 points and Reggie Jackson and Aaron Jackson added 19 and 18 respectively as Duquesne never trailed in a 101-84 win ... in Everhart's first trip to La Salle, Aaron Jackson scored 15 of his then career high-tying 22 points in the final 2:34 to help Duquesne overcome a seven-point deficit in a 111-105 win ... the victory tied the school road scoring record DU set in a 111-92 win at St. Bonaventure in its previous game ... LA SALLE THIS YEAR: La Salle was picked to finish ninth - one spot behind Duquesne - in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll ... the Explorers, who have already played 12 home games, are 6-6 at Tom Gola Arena including an 89-83 overtime win over Big 5 rival Penn in their last home game ... six-ten, 250-pound sophomore Aaric Murray leads the Explorers in scoring 15.3 ppg. and blocked shots (39) ... he is second on the team in rebounding at 8.1 rpg. ... Murray, a member of the 2010 A-10 All-Rookie team, was a preseason third team all conference pick ... La Salle is second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 77.9 ppg. (Duquesne leads at 80.8 ppg.) ... YOU AGAIN?: La Salle, like Duquesne, has a three-time Rookie of the Week in 6-0 guard Tyreek Duren. Duren, who is averaging 9.2 points and 4.2 assists per game, is familiar to DU's three-time All-Rookie pick T.J. McConnell. The two met in last year's PIAA Class AAA state title game, with Duren's Neumann-Goretti team, which featured four Division I players, defeated McConnell's Chartiers Valley squad 65-63. McConnell had 32 points, 12 rebounds and five steals in the loss. Both Duren and McConnell were named Class AAA All-State, with McConnell named Class AAA Player of the Year.
TEMPLE LEFTOVERS: No. 19/23 (AP/ESPN) Temple missed its first 14 shots and Duquesne jumped out to a 22-2 lead in the 78-66 win ... DU maintained a double-digit lead from the 17:40 mark of the first half on ... the Dukes ended a streak of 12 consecutive losses to ranked Temple teams dating back to a 66-64 win over the No. 10 (AP) Owls on Feb. 25, 1956 ... DU entered the game 1-13 against ranked Temple teams ... Ron Everhart is now 2-1 against ranked teams at the Palumbo Center (2-0 vs. ranked A-10 squads) ... prior to Everhart's arrival, Duquesne was 2-14 against ranked opponents at its on-campus facility which opened its doors in December of 1988 ... 5-0 in 2011: The last time Duquesne began the month of January with five consecutive wins was in 1971 when the NCAA Tournament Dukes (21-4), in the midst of a 15-game win streak, went 14-0 to start the New Year (they won their final game in December, went 7-0 in January and won their first seven in February).
3-0 IN THE A-10: This is the just the second time Duquesne University has opened conference play with three-straight wins. Ron Everhart's 2008-09 NIT Dukes are the only other team in school history to open league play 3-0.
STREAKING: This is the fifth win streak of five or more games posted by Ron Everhart's Duquesne teams in his five seasons as head coach. Everhart's teams now own five of the 11 longest win streaks posted by DU teams since 1969-70. The current six-game streak is the second-longest of the Everhart Era (to a seven-game streak in 2008-09).
70 IS THE KEY: Duquesne is 70-34 under Ron Everhart when scoring 70 or more points (10-2 this year). Conversely, the Dukes are 5-32 (1-3 this year) when scoring under 70 under the fifth-year head coach.
