QUICK NOTES Duquesne (7-10, 0-3), in the midst of a five-game losing streak, returns home to face a No. 22/19 (AP/USA Today) VCU (15-3, 3-0) - a team tied for the nation's second-longest win streak at 12 - at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at CONSOL Energy Center ... this is the first meeting between the Dukes and first-year Atlantic 10 member Rams.
This is the second of three home games for the Dukes at CONSOL (DU defeated WVU, 60-56, on Dec. 11 and will host Xavier on Feb. 9 ... DU also faced Pitt in a neutral game at CONSOL on Dec. 5) ... DU is averaging 8,132 in five all-time home games at CONSOL.
VCU is ranked by the AP for the first time since 1984-85 ... this is DU's first game against a ranked opponent this season ... the Dukes, who are 46-114 all-time vs. ranked foes, have won their past two home games against ranked opponents (72-68 over #9 Xavier on Feb. 7, 2009 & 78-66 over #19 Temple on Jan. 15, 2011) ... both of those games were played at the Palumbo Center ... this is DU's first game vs. a ranked A-10 team at CONSOL.
DU, which is 6-2 at home (1-0 at CONSOL), had a five-game home win streak snapped by Saint Joseph's on Jan. 12 (74-66) ... VCU is the lone A-10 team without a road loss (4-0).
Duquesne, behind a career-high 29 points from Sean Johnson, cut a 17-point UMass lead to three on three occasions in the second half (last with 6:54 left) but could get no closer in a 79-66 loss at Amherst on Thursday ... VCU, down four with 15 seconds left, rallied to tie Saint Joseph's with eight seconds left and went on to defeat the Hawks 92-86 in overtime at Siegel Center also on Thursday night.
Three of DU's top five scorers are freshmen: Derrick Colter (13.4 ppg.), Quevyn Winters (8.2) and Jeremiah Jones (6.9). Colter (Dec. 17 & 24) and Winters (Dec. 31) combined to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for three-straight weeks in December. Colter, who has scored in double digits in his past nine games (16.6 ppg. over that span), is second on the team in scoring (13.4 ppg., 0.8 behind Sean Johnson) and leads in assists (86/5.1 apg.) ... only four players in school history have led the Dukes in scoring and assists - all were seniors: Aaron Jackson (19.3/5.7 in 2009), Bryant McAllister (19.7/4.8 in 2006), Courtney Wallace (16.6/3.4 in 2001) and Mike James (17.5/3.5 in 1998).
Colter (30.9), Jeremiah Jones (23.4) and Winters (20.4) are averaging over 20 minutes per game ... the threesome - who rank second, fifth and fourth on the team in scoring - is accounting for just over 40 percent of DU's points and over half of the team's 3-pointers (69-of-134).
DU's Sam Bott and VCU's Rob Brandenburg were high school teammates at Gahanna (Ohio)/Lincoln.
NOTING THE RAMS This is the first meeting between Duquesne and first-year A-10 member VCU ... VCU was picked to finish third in the preseason poll of league coaches ... the Rams began the week ranked first nationally in both steals per game (13.2) and turnover margin (+8.6) ... guard Troy Daniels was leading the nation in 3-pointers made per game (4.12) and Briante Weber was leading in steals per game (3.59) ... Daniels hit an Atlantic 10 record 11 3-pointers on 20 attempts at East Tennessee State on Jan. 2 ... he also hit nine in 16 attempts vs. Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 29 ... Weber had 10 steals, the second-highest total in A-10 history, against Florida Gulf Coast Nov. 9.
ROADIES VCU is the only Atlantic 10 school without a road loss (4-0) ... the wins have come over Winthrop (90-54), Old Dominion (83-70), East Tennessee State (109-58) and St. Bonaventure (72-65) ... the four were a combined 20-47 through Thursday (Winthrop 7-9, ETSU 4-14, ODU 2-15 & SBU 7-9) ... VCU has won 10 of its 11 true road games dating back to last January.
VCU LATELY The No. 22 Rams (15-3, 3-0), who earned their first AP rank since 1984-85 this week, extended their winning streak to 12 with a 92-86 overtime victory over Saint Joseph's at home on Thursday ... the streak is tied with Butler for second-longest in the nation behind Kansas (14) ...Treveon Graham had 25 points and Darius Theus added 22 points and four steals in the win ... Juvonte Reddic posted 15 points and 17 boards for the Rams who outscored SJU 31-3 off turnovers ... VCU's three losses have come to No. 1 Duke, No. 10 Missouri and No. 23 Wichita State ... Saint Joe's was the first team to score more than 70 points against VCU this season.
DUQUESNE VS. AP RANKED TEAMS Duquesne is 46-114 all time against AP ranked teams. On Feb. 7, 2009, the Dukes ended a 24-game losing streak against ranked teams with a 72-68 home win over No. 9 (AP) Xavier. It was DU's first win over a ranked team since Jan. 25, 1997 (at No. 16 (AP) Xavier) and the first over a Top 10 team since Dec. 15, 1992 (91-84 at home over No. 10 (AP) Florida State). It was also the highest ranked team a Duquesne team defeated since an 88-87 overtime win over No. 9 (AP) Providence on Jan. 31, 1974 at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena. DU added another ranked win over No. 19 (AP) Temple on Jan. 15, 2011 (78-66 at the Palumbo Center) to give it wins in its last two home games against ranked opponents.
UMASS LEFTOVERS Notes from Duquesne's 79-66 loss at UMass on Thursday ... Duquesne, which trailed by as many as 17 (with 0:01 left in the first half), rallied to cut the UMass lead to three on three occasions in the second half before being outscored 14-4 down the stretch ... the Dukes trailed 65-62 with 6:54 to go when the Minutemen began their game-deciding run ... the Dukes managed just one field goal over the final 7:12 ... Sean Johnson, who scored a career-high 29 points, single-handedly got the Dukes back in the game with 14 points in the first 4:10 of the second half ... Johnson, who tied his career high with four 3-pointers, hit three during the four-plus minute surge ... he was fouled on the last for a four-point play ... Johnson scored his 29th point with 10:19 left ... the Dukes turned it over 12 times and were outscored 13-2 off turnovers in falling behind 44-30 at the half ... DU turned it over just three times in the second 20 minutes ... Derrick Colter was the only other Duke in double figures with 14 points ... he also had a team-high six assists ... Andre Marhold had nine rebounds in 22 minutes ... DU was outrebounded 39-35 and outscored 18-9 in second-chance points.
LOOSE ENDS Duquesne is 6-3 when scoring 70 or more, 4-0 when scoring 80 or more, 5-1 when leading at the half and 5-0 when leading with 5:00 left ... in an oddity of sorts, the Dukes are 2-4 when holding opponents under 70 points and 2-2 when holding opponents under 40 percent from the floor.
TRENDING ... Sean Johnson's 29 points at UMass were the most by a DU player since B.J. Monteiro scored 30 against Fordham last year ... it was the most points by a Duke in a road game since Aaron Jackson scored 46 at Virginia Tech in the 2009 NIT.
Freshman Derrick Colter has scored in double digits in nine consecutive games ... he is averaging 16.7 points (22-of-58, .379 from 3-point) and 5.8 assists per game over that span (150 points, 52 assists with 28 turnovers) ... he has hit at least three 3-pointers in six of his past nine games.
Sophomore Kadeem Pantophlet has pulled down at least six rebounds in 10 of his past 13 games ... his season average stands at 5.3 rpg. ... he averaged 1.8 rpg. as a freshman.
Sophomore forward Mamadou Datt, who sat out the first semester to concentrate on academics, has 15 rebounds in 42 minutes of three games ... he had 8 boards in 15 minutes off the bench vs. Saint Joseph's.
Senior Andre Marhold has 20 rebounds in 45 minutes and is 8-of-11 from the field in DU's past two games.
Duquesne's rebound margin is +8.8 at home and -4.4 on the road (including neutral-site games) ... DU which was outrebounded 132-88 in road losses at Louisiana-Lafayette (33-26), at Penn State (50-28) and at Fordham (49-34), outboarded Saint Joseph's 47-33 in its last home game.
