@DuqMBB PREVIEW: AT SAINT LOUIS
Jan. 28, 2016
Duquesne (14-7, 4-4), winner of four of five, heads to St. Louis to face Saint Louis University (8-12, 3-5) on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 6:00 p.m. (ET) in a game that will be televised by ASN (22 The Point! locally - tape delay at 9:30 p.m.). This is the second of two meetings between the Dukes and Billikens. Duquesne defeated Saint Louis, 81-71, in Pittsburgh on Jan. 13.
DU, which opened Atlantic 10 play with three losses, evened its conference record at 4-4 with an 87-60 win over La Salle on Tuesday. Derrick Colter tied his carer high with 27 points and Micah Mason (14-10a) and Eric James (11-15) posted double-doubles in the victory, which enabled the Dukes to eclipse their highest win total under fourth-year head coach Jim Ferry (13-17 in 2014).
Duquesne is holding opponents to their lowest field goal percentage in 45 years (.402). The defensive field goal percentage is the best by a DU team since the 1970-71 NCAA Tournament team held opponents to .389. The Dukes have held nine opponents under 40 percent this season. Only three teams - Pitt (.554), South Carolina State (.456) and VCU (.525) - have shot better than 45 percent against Duquesne this year. DU is limiting its A-10 opponents to .390 shooting.
Saint Louis had won seven of eight - including the last five in a row, before DU's upset win over the No. 10 (AP) Billikens at Chaifetz Arena on Feb. 27, 2014 ... the Dukes have now won four of the past five.
DU won the first meeting this season, 81-71 on Jan. 13 ... since that game, SLU is 2-2 ... the Billikens - who were averaging 63.5 ppg. at the time of their first meeting with Duquesne, averaged 87 ppg. in their next three games, prior to dropping a 73-37 decision at Dayton on Wednesday.
In six career games vs. Saint Louis, DU senior guard Micah Mason is averaging 17.2 ppg. on .586 shooting ... Mason is 21-of-37 from 3-point against the Billikens.
DU is holding opponents to their lowest shooting percentage in 45 years. The opponent .402 mark is the lowest since 1970-71 (.389).
The Dukes have held their past two opponents, George Mason (.347) and La Salle (.300), to a combined .324 from the field (47-of-145).
Duquesne, which shot .365 in its first three conference games, is shooting .478 in its past five. DU is averaging 84.0 ppg. over that span.
The Dukes are 25-of-58 (.431) from the 3-point arc in their past two games.
Sophomore Eric James has 41 rebounds in DU's past four games. James is coming off a career-high 15 rebound game vs. La Salle.
The Dukes have outrebounded 13 of 21 opponents and are 12-1 in those games.
Micah Mason - who topped the 1,000-point career mark vs. SC State on Dec. 16 - is closing in on his 1,000th point in a Duquesne uniform. The Drake transfer enters the SLU game with 1,138 points overall, including 976 in 76 games at DU.
