Duquesne (7-15, 0-8) hosts Xavier (12-9, 5-3) in the fourth annual Chuck Cooper Classic presented by PNC at CONSOL Energy Center on Saturday, Feb. 9. The game, which will be televised by Time Warner Cablevision, will air locally on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh.
DU, which saw its losing streak reach 10 in a 79-57 defeat at the hands of George Washington on Wednesday, is 6-5 at home (1-1 in home games at CONSOL). The Dukes are 3-3 all-time in home games at CONSOL. Duquesne has lost its last four at home (last home W on Dec. 19 over Western Michigan). Xavier, which has been idle since a 73-71 loss at Richmond last Saturday, has dropped five of its past six on the road.
Freshmen lead both Xavier and Duquesne in scoring and assists. Six-three Semaj Christon is averaging 14.9 points and 4.45 assists per game for the Musketeers, while 5-11 Derrick Colter paces the Dukes at 13.0 ppg. and 5.09 apg. Colter has done his damage from long distance (38 3-pointers) while Christon has shown a knack for getting to the rim (66-of-109 from the foul line). Christon (four) and Colter (two) have combined to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors six times.
Seven of DU's 15 losses have come to teams that began the week ranked in the NCAA RPI Top 80 ... DU's top RPI wins have been over Western Michigan (91) and West Virginia (98).
Three of DU's top five scorers are freshmen: Derrick Colter (13.0 ppg.), Quevyn Winters (8.3) and Jeremiah Jones (7.8). Colter (Dec. 17 & 24) and Winters (Dec. 31) combined to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for three-straight weeks in December. Colter leads the team in scoring (0.3 ahead of Sean Johnson) and assists (112/5.09 apg.). Only four players in school history have led the Dukes in scoring and assists - all were seniors: Aaron Jackson (19.3/5.7 in 2009), Bryant McAllister (19.7/4.8 in 2006), Courtney Wallace (16.6/3.4 in 2001) and Mike James (17.5/3.5 in 1998).
Colter (31.3), Jeremiah Jones (24.7) and Winters (20.1) are all averaging over 20 minutes per game. The threesome - which ranks first, fifth and third on the team in scoring - is accounting for 42.9 percent of DU's points and over half of the team's 3-pointers (94-of-178).
Colter, the eighth freshman in school history to total 100 assists in a season (he has 112), is averaging a team high 5.09 apg. He is on pace to become just the fourth freshman in school history to average five assists in a season. The others are: Norm Nixon (6.00 in 1974), Kenya Hunter (5.29 in 1993) and Clayton Adams (5.09 in 1988).
The Dukes, who ranked 337th of 338th schools in rebounding margin last season (-7.5 rpg.), are being outrebounded by -1.3 per game - a net improvement of 6.2 rpg. DU was outrebounding opponents by +5.3 before its current losing streak. Duquesne has outrebounded its opponents by +8.2 per game in its seven wins (300-243) ... in 15 losses, the Dukes have been outrebounded by 5.7 per contest (511-597) ... DU's margin in conference play is -8.0.
Duquesne begins a stretch of three games in six days at Temple on Thurs., Feb. 14. The Dukes return home to face Rhode Island on Sat., Feb. 16 before heading to Indianapolis to face nationally ranked Butler on Tues., Feb. 19 (ROOT Sports Pittsburgh TV).
SERIES QUICK NOTES
This is the 46th meeting in a series that dates to Jan. 26, 1964 ... Xavier leads the series 28-17 (20-6 in Atlantic 10 regular season) ... in games played at Pittsburgh, XU holds a slim 11-10 advantage.
Xavier has won the past three in the series including a 71-63 victory at CONSOL Energy Center on Feb. 13, 2011 ... Duquesne had won two in a row at home against the Musketeers prior to the 2011 meeting.
The average point margin in the past four Pittsburgh meetings has been 6.3 ppg. (XU an 11-point win in 2005, DU a 2-point win in 2007, DU a 4-point win in 2009 and XU an 8-point win in 2011) ... on the other hand, Xavier has won the past four Cincinnati meetings by an average of 28 ppg. with 21 points the smallest margin.
Xavier has dropped five of its last six road games - including the last three in a row ... the lone win came by two points (66-64) at St. Bonaventure.

Xavier, picked to finish ninth in the A-10 preseason poll, owns noteworthy non-conference wins over Butler (62-47 in a Nov. 13 game scheduled prior to the Bulldogs joining the A-10), Robert Morris (61-59), and Purdue (63-57) ... the Musketeers are 2-5 on the road, including a 1-3 mark in road conference games ... XU has been led by four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week G Semaj Christon (14.9 ppg., 89 assists, 30 steals).
