Duquesne (8-20, 1-13) completes the home portion of the 2012-13 schedule on Wednesday, Mar. 6 at 7:00 p.m. against Charlotte (18-10, 6-8). This is the final home game for seniors Sean Johnson and Andre Marhold who will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
This is the last Atlantic 10 meeting between Duquesne and Charlotte as the 49ers will begin play in Conference USA next season. The all-time series is tied at 5-5.
First-year head coach Jim Ferry has started three freshmen in each of the Dukes' past six games (PG Derrick Colter, G/F Jeremiah Jones and F Quevyn Winters). Over that span, Colter (82, 13.7 ppg.), Winters (82, 13.7 ppg.) and Jones (49, 8.2 ppg.) are accounting for 54 percent of DU's points. Colter, a three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week is the only Duke to start all 28 games, Jones has started 20 times and Winters six.
Colter (13.1), Winters (9.4) and Jones (7.9) are accounting for 45 percent of DU's points and over half of the team's 3-pointers (120-of-224). It is the highest percentage of team points ever produced by a DU freshman class. This is the first time in school history DU has three freshmen with over 200 points (Colter-367, Winters-264 and Jones-221).
Colter leads the team in scoring and assists (13.1/5.1). Only four players in school history have led the Dukes in scoring and assists - all were seniors: Aaron Jackson (19.3/5.7 in 2009), Bryant McAllister (19.7/4.8 in 2006), Courtney Wallace (16.6/3.4 in 2001) and Mike James (17.5/3.5 in 1998).
Ten of DU's 20 losses have come to teams who began the week ranked in the NCAA RPI Top 100 ... DU's top RPI wins have been over Temple (42), Western Michigan (112) and West Virginia (113).
Sean Johnson, who will be playing in his 122nd game (passing former teammate B.J. Monteiro for 3rd-most in school history), became Duquesne's 37th 1,000-point scorer with a game-high 21 vs. New Orleans on Dec. 8. Johnson enters the Charlotte game No. 24 on DU's all-time scoring list with 1,216 points. He needs 13 to pass No. 23 Monteiro (1,228 from 2009-12).
Three of DU's top four scorers are freshmen: #1 Derrick Colter (13.1 ppg.), #3 Quevyn Winters (9.4) and #4 Jeremiah Jones (7.9).
Derrick Colter (Dec. 17 & 24) and Quevyn Winters (Dec. 31) combined to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for three-straight weeks in December. It marked just the fourth time DU has had multiple Rookies of the Week in the same season. It was the first time since 1,500-point scorers Damian Saunders (three times) and Bill Clark (once) did it in 2007-08. Colter added a third Rookie of the Week on Feb. 17.
Colter leads the team in scoring (13.1) and assists (144/5.14 apg.).
Colter, the eighth freshman in school history to total 100 assists in a season (he has 144), is averaging a team high 5.14 apg. He is on pace to become just the fourth freshman in school history to average five assists in a season. The others are: Norm Nixon (6.00 in 1974), Kenya Hunter (5.29 in 1993) and Clayton Adams (5.09 in 1988).
Next up: DU completes the regular season at Richmond on Sat., March 9 at 6:00 p.m.
