Soko Named Third Team All-Atlantic 10
March 11, 2014
Duquesne senior forward Ovie Soko (London, England/UAB) was named third team All-Atlantic 10 by vote of the league's 13 head coaches released today.
Soko, a first-year transfer from UAB, leads the league in scoring at 18.2 ppg. He is the only forward among the A-10's top 13 scorers as well as the only player in the conference who ranks in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding (7.9 rpg.). His scoring average is the highest by a Duquesne player since first team All-A-10 guard Aaron Jackson averaged 19.3 ppg. in 2009. It is the best average by a non-guard since center Derrick Alston - another first team All-A-10 pick - averaged 21.3 ppg. in 1994.
The last DU player to lead the A-10 in scoring was Bryant McAllister who averaged 19.7 ppg. in earning second team all-conference honors in 2006.
Soko, who ranks second nationally in free throw attempts (193-286), has already broken DU's record for free throws made and attempted set by All-American Sihugo Green in 1956 (180-258).
Soko is the first Duke to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors under second-year head coach Jim Ferry.
Tenth-seed Duquesne (13-16) faces seventh-seeded Richmond (18-13) in the first round of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The game will be televised nationally by NBCSN.
