Colter Named to Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team

March 12, 2013

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne freshman guard Derrick Colter (Forestville, Md./Largo), the first underclassman to lead a Duquesne team in scoring (13.5 ppg.) and assists (156/5.2 apg.), was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team by vote of the A-10's 16 head coaches released today.

The 5-11 Maryland native was joined on the team by A-10 Rookie of the Year Semaj Christon of Xavier, Kellen Dunham of Butler, Willie Clayton of Charlotte and Melvin Johnson of VCU.

Colter, a three-time 2012-13 A-10 Rookie of the Week, is the 17th player in school history to earn a spot on the conference's rookie (1981-85; 1995-13) or freshman (1986-94) teams.

The lone DU player to start all 30 games, Colter averaged a team-high 32.2 minutes per game. He scored in double digits a team-high 23 times and also led the Dukes in scoring 13 times and assists on 24 occasions - both team highs. He finished second in the Atlantic 10 with a 5.2 assists per game average and was the league's second-leading freshman scorer behind Christon. His 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked 11th in the conference and was the best among freshmen.

This is the ninth time in the past 11 seasons Duquesne head coach Jim Ferry has coached an all-rookie team member. Ferry, who just completed his first season at DU, had eight Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team picks in his 10 seasons at LIU Brooklyn.
