PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University head men's basketball coach Jim Ferry has announced the signing of 6-7 forward TySean Powell (Twinsburg, Ohio/IMG (Fla.) Academy) to a National Letter of Intent.

Powell, rated as 3-star recruit by Scout.com, is the first member of the 2014-15 recruiting class.

"We're really excited to have TySean as part of our program," said Ferry. "He has the athletic ability to greatly impact our frontcourt and help ease the loss of another great athlete in [graduated senior] Ovie Soko. TySean is `long' in basketball terms, meaning that he has the kind of wingspan that allows him to play bigger than his listed height. We look for him to be a contributor for the next four years."

Powell played on the same team as Duquesne guard Desmond Ridenour as a freshman and sophomore at Benedictine High School in Cleveland before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he averaged 16.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game this past season. He scored 20 or more six times and posted seven double-doubles in 19 games.

Powell averaged 7.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game in helping Benedictine to the Division II Westlake District championship as a junior.
