Duquesne University head men's basketball coach Ron Everhart has announced the transfer of Shawn James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) from Northeastern University. James, a 6-10, 210-pound forward led the nation in blocked shots last season on the way to being named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year. James, who will sit out the 2006-07 season per NCAA transfer rules, will have two years of eligibility at DU. "Shawn has shown more improvement in two seasons than any player I've ever coached," said Everhart who recruited and coached James at Northeastern. "If he continues to work hard he can be an impact player in the Atlantic 10." "I'm really happy to get settled," said James who moved to Pittsburgh in mid-June and is currently enrolled in summer classes at Duquesne. "I'm looking forward to doing everything I can to help this team get better. Hopefully I can help improve the intensity at practice and maybe provide some guidance to our younger players. At the same time, I'll be able to continue to work on my game and prepare for the level of competition in the Atlantic 10." James, whose 6.53 blocks per game last season was an NCAA record, holds NCAA marks for blocks average by a freshman (5.44) and sophomore. His 196 rejections last season were more than 316 of the 326 teams playing Division I basketball. "Shawn has always had a gift for blocking shots," said Everhart. "But he is more than just a shot-blocker. He can rebound and also step out and knock down a 3-pointer. The sky is the limit for him." James, who will be able to practice with the team this fall, posted four triple-doubles in 55 career games at Northeastern. The holder of Northeastern's single-season field goal percentage record (63.3% as a freshman), James also has the distinction of being the Defensive Player of the Year in two different leagues (America East as a freshman in 2005 and Colonial Athletic Association following Northeastern's conference change in 2006).
