July 9, 2014
PITTSBURGH - Former Duke Ovie Soko has been selected to represent Great Britain as part of British Basketball's Senior Men's Team.
Soko, a native of London, joins former Duke Kieron Achara (Stirling, Scotland) on the team that will represent Great Britain in its quest for a EuroBasket title.
Achara, who played at Duquesne from 2004-08 and competed for Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympic Games, is co-captain of the 22-man squad. Also on the team is former Long Island University Brooklyn forward Kyle Johnson who helped current Duquesne coach Jim Ferry's Blackbirds to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2011.
The squad list also includes NBA players Luol Deng, Joel Freeland and Byron Mullens, whose participation in camp is subject to free agency and NBA summer league commitments.
Soko, who led the Atlantic 10 in scoring on his way to earning third team all-conference honors, had tryouts with a number of NBA teams prior to this year's draft. He is currently in Europe looking to secure a professional contract for the upcoming season.
The senior men's team will gather in Worcester for a short training camp which begins on Tuesday, July 15th. Their first preparation games against Latvia will take place on Saturday July 19th and Sunday July 20th at the University of Worcester Arena.
The team will play seven preparation games between July 19 and August 4.
EuroBasket qualifying games begin on August 10th when Team GB visits Iceland. Great Britain will play Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland again on consecutive Wednesdays before concluding play against Bosnia-Herzegovina on August 24th.
