PITTSBURGH - B.J. Monteiro, who graduated from Duquesne in May, has signed a contract to play professionally for Liege Basket of Belgium's Ethias League - the highest-level league in the country.

Monteiro, who finished his career 23rd on DU's scoring list (1,227 points), third in games played (121) and fifth in blocks (80), is the ninth Duquesne player since 2007-08 to sign a contract to play overseas.

The Waterbury, Conn. native was a three-year starter for the Dukes. He led last year's 16-15 team in scoring (15.0 ppg.) and rebounding (5.4 rpg.), was second in minutes played (31.0/g.) and blocks (28) and third in steals (30) and assists (61).

Duquesne went 72-57 during his four seasons with postseason appearances in 2009 (NIT), 2010 (CBI) & 2011 (CBI).

Former Dukes who are still playing professionally are (with team they played for last year listed): Kieron Achara (Manresa - Spain), Derrick Alston (Penarol - Argentina), Bill Clark (Fos Ouest - France), Keith Gayden (San Martin - Argentina), Aaron Jackson (Bizkaia Bilbao - Spain, has since signed with CSKA Moscow), Reggie Jackson (Porto Ferpinta - Portugal), Shawn James (Maccabi T-A - Israel), Bryant McAllister (Mt. Gambier - Australia), Kojo Mensah (Flamengo - Venezuela), Martin Osimani (Obras - Argentina), Damian Saunders (BG Gottingen - Germany, finished the year with Rio Grande of the NBA Developmental League), Kevin Shand (Oshawa - Canada) and Morakinyo Williams (Mersey Tigers - United Kingdom).

 

 

Gary Tucker, a guard on the 2007-08 team, played one season in Germany following his graduation. Clark, both Jacksons, Shawn James, Kojo Mensah, Damian Saunders and Morakinyo Williams all played at DU since 2007-08.

Liege Basket opens its season on Oct. 6.
