Head men's basketball coach Ron Everhart announced today that forward Damian Saunders (Waterbury, Conn./Crosby/Notre Dame Prep) has been admitted to Duquesne and will begin taking classes on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Saunders, who played for Duquesne assistant coach Bill Barton at Notre Dame Prep last season, was ranked as the sixth-best post-graduate player in the nation by Scout.com. He was also rated as a "four star" recruit by Tom Konchalski of the HSBI Report.

"Damian is a great addition to our ballclub," said Everhart. "He's a great athlete and a real solid player. I'm pleased to have him with us at Duquesne. He will add additional depth and athleticism to our ballclub."

The 6-7, 205-pound Saunders averaged 8.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and close to three blocked shots per game for a Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) team that finished 32-3 and won the national prep school championship in 2006-07 under Barton. He was an all-state player at Crosby High School in Waterbury, Conn. prior to enrolling at Notre Dame Prep.

"Damian is just a great kid," said Barton. "He is an explosive run-and-jump athlete. He is effortless in transition and a very good rebounder. I think his freshman year impact will be on the defensive end and in transition. Damian had a number of offers from Big East schools. He will be a great addition to the Duquesne program."

Saunders was a member of Crosby's 2005 Division I state championship team. He averaged 22.5 points, 15.8 rebounds and 8.0 blocks in helping Crosby to 23 wins and a third-straight league title in 2006.

Saunders was also recruited by Marquette, Providence, Tennessee and Cincinnati.
