Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll Released
Oct. 8, 2013
BROOKLYN, NY - The three returning Atlantic 10 teams that appeared in last year's NCAA Championship - VCU, Saint Louis and La Salle - were picked to finish one, two and three in the annual poll of Atlantic 10 coaches and media released today as part of the league's annual media day at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Duquesne, which returns two starters from last year's 8-22 team, was picked to finish 13th. The Dukes did not land any players on the A-10 Preseason All-Conference, All-Defense or All-Rookie teams.
DU will have a new look in 2013-14 with eight first-year scholarship players on the roster. The newcomers join returning starters sophomores Derrick Colter (13.5, 5.2a) - a 2013 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team pick - and Jeremiah Jones (7.7, 4.1). Senior forward Jerry Jones (7.3, 3.6) is the only other scholarship returnee.
Second-year head coach Jim Ferry and his staff brought in a seven-man recruiting class, which will be bolstered by 6-8, 225-pound senior Ovie Soko, who sat out last season following his transfer from UAB. Soko played in 88 games as a two-year starter for the Blazers from 2010 through 2012.
The Atlantic 10 - with the addition of first-year member George Mason - will compete as a 13-team conference in 2013-14.
All 13 teams will advance to the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship March 12-16 at Barclays Center, with the top four finishers receiving first round byes.
The Dukes will host an exhibition game against Clarion on Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m., before opening the 2013-14 regular season at home against Abilene Christian on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2:00 p.m.
