WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Duquesne sophomore guard Mike Lewis II was named preseason third team All-Atlantic 10 in the annual poll of conference coaches and media released today. The the announcement was made as part of the league's annual media day at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Lewis II is the first Duke since T.J. McConnell, who was a third team pick in 2011-12, to earn preseason all-conference honors. Lewis II averaged a team-high 14.1 ppg. in earning a spot on the A-10 All-Rookie Team last season.
Lewis II is one of three underclassman named to one of the three preseason teams joining Richmond sophomore De'Monte Buckingham (second team) and Saint Joseph's sophomore Charlie Brown (third team).
Duquesne, which returns two starters from last year's 10-22 team, was picked to finish 14th in the preseason team poll. Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph's, VCU and Dayton were picked to finish in the top five spots. URI, the defending A-10 Champion, received 27 of a possible 28 first place votes, with St. Bonaventure receiving the other.
All 14 teams will advance to the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship March 7-11 at Capital One Arena, with the top four finishers receiving byes to the quarterfinal.
The Dukes, in their first season under head coach Keith Dambrot, open the regular season at home against St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
Dambrot's Dukes return six lettermen led by Lewis II (14.1, 2.3) and fellow returning starter junior guard Tarin Smith (8.6 ppg., 99 assists, 34 steals). Graduate students guard Rene Castro-Caneddy (7.1, 1.5) and center Jordan Robinson (3.7, 2.9) are also back along with senior forward Eric James (2.3, 2.2). Sophomore forward Kellon Taylor (1.2, 0.8), a two-sport athlete, will rejoin the team following football season.
Duquesne has added five newcomers including 6-8 grad transfer forward/center Chas Brown (12.6, 7.1 at Coppin State in 2016-17), 6-9 junior college transfer forward Marko Krivacevic along with freshmen Nicholas Kratholm (6-8), Tydus Verhoeven (6-8) and Eric Williams Jr. (6-5).
Fans will have an opportunity to meet both the men's and women's teams at the Dukes, Dunks and Donuts event on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Palumbo Center.
