PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University guard Jason Duty (Cranberry Township, Pa./Vincentian Academy) has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2009-10 men's basketball Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.

The award - presented annually to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year in eight sports - focuses on the "Four C's" of classroom, character, community and competition. Lowe's, an official partner of the NCAA, will award the men's basketball winner with a trophy during the Final Four weekend.

Duty enters his senior year with a 3.72 grade point average as an accounting major - one of the more rigorous majors offered at Duquesne. He was named CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 2 and to the Atlantic 10 men's basketball All-Academic team in 2008-09. He is just the fourth men's basketball player in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. A multiple member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's and Duquesne Director of Athletics honor rolls, Duty already has been offered a position by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the world's largest professional services firm, upon graduation.

The Cranberry Township, Pa. native is the second Duquesne player in three years to be named a finalist, joining Kieron Achara who became the first player in school history to be nominated for the Lowe's Senior Class Award in 2007-08.

Last year Duty started all 34 games for a Duquesne team that posted its most wins since 1971 and made the school's first postseason appearance (NIT) since 1994. He finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 with a 41.4 three-point shooting percentage. Duty hit at least one three-pointer in 28 games and made at least three 3-pointers in a game nine times as a junior. He averaged 7.4 points per game and shot 82.9 percent from the foul line. In addition, he shot 56.3 percent from three-point range during Duquesne's five postseason games. Duty is the active team leader in games played at 79.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the CLASS Award was launched during the 2001-02 season to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who remain committed to their university and pursue the many rewards that a senior season and complete college education brings.

Duty is one of two Atlantic 10 student-athletes named to the 2009-10 list along with La Salle's Yves Mbala. The A-10 has produced two of the eight winners of the award in Xavier's David West (2003) and Saint Joseph's Jameer Nelson (2004).

A national media committee will pare the list to 10 finalists in January. Those 10 names will be placed on the official national ballot for a nationwide vote during the NCAA Tournament in March. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the award recipient.
