PITTSBURGH – Duquesne University head men’s basketball coach Jim Ferry has announced the signing of 6-8, 220-pound forward Isaiah Watkins (Toronto, Ontario/St. Benedict’s (N.J.) Prep) to a National Letter of Intent.

Watkins, a consensus 3-star recruit (Rivals, Scout and 247Sports), is the first member of the 2013-14 recruiting class.

“I’m excited to have Isaiah as part of our program,” said Ferry. “He’s a quality person who comes from an outstanding family. He is an excellent student who has competed at the highest levels at both St. Benedict’s as well as with CIA Bounce. His is a physical player with the kind of versatility that not only fills a need, but will allow us to play the way we want to play.”

Watkins averaged 8.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists as a junior for a 35-3 St. Benedict’s Prep team that finished the year ranked No. 21 nationally by USA Today. St. Benedict’s reached a high rank of No. 9 before losing to eventual champion Findlay Prep in the ESPN RISE National High School Invitational. Six of Watkins’ Gray Bees teammates are expected to sign with Division I programs.

Ranked as one of’s top five Canadian recruits, Watkins played AAU ball for CIA Bounce. His aunt, Khalihah Este-Shehu, played at Duquesne from 2000-03.

Watkins received a number of scholarship offers from schools ranging from the Pac-12 (Washington & Oregon State), to the ACC (Miami), SEC (Arkansas), Big East (Villanova) and Ivy League (Princeton).
