This will be the first meeting between the Dukes and Broncos ... it is also the first game of a home-and home series.
WMU finished 21-13 last year on the way to the CIT ... it was the eighth 20-win season in program history and the fourth under head coach Steve Hawkins, who began in 2004 ... the Broncos finished 11-5 in the MAC, good for the MAC West title ... WMU advanced to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, defeating Bowling Green 67-56 before falling to eventual champion Akron ... WMU returns all five starters from last season.
This is DU's second of three games vs. Mid-American Conference schools ... the Dukes defeated Akron, 81-76, in the 2K Sports Classic at Valparaiso, Ind. on Nov. 20 ... DU hosts Bowling Green on Dec. 28.
MORE ON WMU: Western Michigan, which opened the season with six consecutive losses, has won two of its past three including a 54-43 home victory over Southern Illinois in its last outing on Dec. 11 ... this is the second of three consecutive home games for the Broncos who are 2-0 at University Arena ... Matt Stainbrook, WMU's 6-9, 290-pound sophomore center began the week ranked 14th nationally in field goal percentage (.617) ... Western Michigan is the seventh of DU's first 11 opponents who made a post-season appearance last year: Akron (W), Arizona (L), Penn State (W) and Pitt (L) all played in the NCAA tournament while Tennessee Tech (W), Valparaiso (L) and Western Michigan all appeared in the College Insider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).
Two of DU's four losses have come to ranked teams: 67-59 at No. 16 (AP) Arizona and 80-69 to No. 17 (AP) Pitt at CONSOL Energy Center (neutral-site).
Duquesne held Penn State to an opponent season-low 59 points in its 66-59 home win at CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 10 ... it was just the sixth time in 41 games that a Ron Everhart-coached DU team won a game when scoring under 70 points.
Ron Everhart inherited a Duquesne program that had won a total of 17 road games in the 10 seasons prior to his arrival. In his six seasons, Everhart's Dukes have posted 29 road wins. Of the 29 wins, 22 have been by double digits. From 1996-97 through 2005-06 Duquesne posted a total of three double-digit road victories.
PENN STATE LEFTOVERS: Notes from Duquesne's 66-59 win over Penn State at CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 10 ... it was just the third time in 20 games - and first time in 40 years - that a Big Ten team faced the Dukes in Pittsburgh ... a crowd of 7,046 turned out for the game which was played at the off-campus CONSOL Energy Center ... Duquesne used an 11-0 run early in the second half to break open a tight game ... there were 10 ties and nine lead changes before Eric Evans, who scored a season-high 20 points, gave DU the lead for good on a jumper with 14:56 left ... Evans scored 15 in the second half ... Jerry Jones provided a spark off the bench with a career-high 14 points - 11 in the second half - in a career-best 23 minutes ... Evans (4 steals) and T.J. McConnell (3 steals) combined for seven of DU's 11 steals ... the Dukes forced 23 PSU turnovers, including 13 in the second half ... McConnell added a game-high 8 assists ... B.J. BE BACK AFTER CHRISTMAS: The Penn State was the last of five in a row in the city of Pittsburgh for the Dukes. The homestand began with a win over Louisiana-Lafayette at the Palumbo Center on Nov. 26. DU was in Pittsburgh for 26 consecutive days prior to departing on Friday, Dec. 16 for the Dec. 17 game at Western Michigan. It will now be 18 days between home games, as following the Western Michigan game DU will head to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason on Dec. 21. Duquesne's next home game is Dec. 28 against Bowling Green.
