Winters Named Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week
Dec. 31, 2012
PITTSBURGH, - Duquesne freshman forward Quevyn Winters (Milwaukee, Wis./M.A.C.K. (N.C.) Academy) has been named Atlantic 10 co-Rookie of the Week it was announced today. It is the third consecutive week DU has taken home A-10 ROW honors as fellow freshman Derrick Colter was honored on Dec. 17 & 24.
This is just the fourth time in school history - and first time in a 16-team league - that DU has produced two different Rookies of the Week in the same season. The last two to accomplish the feat were 1,500-point scorers Damian Saunders (three times) and Bill Clark (once) in 2007-08. Duquesne's other multiple same-season Rookies of the Week are Robert Mitchell (five times) and Scott Grote (once) in 2006-07 and Tony Petrarca (four times) and Kevin McCarthy (once) in 1986-87.
Winters, who shares this week's honor with Butler guard Kellen Dunham, went 5-of-10 from the field in scoring 14 points to go along with four rebounds in the 84-74 loss at Penn State. His second of two 3-pointers cut a 22-point PSU second half lead (with 9:52 remaining) to five with 56 seconds left as Duquesne's comeback fell short.
Winters, who ranks second on the Dukes to Colter in 3-pointers made with 23 (Colter has 24), is averaging 8.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game off the bench. He has scored in double digits five times and has hit multiple 3-pointers in a game eight times.
The streak of Duquesne Rookies of the Week will come to an end on Jan. 6, as the Dukes (7-7) are idle until their Atlantic 10 opener at Fordham on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The Fordham game, set for a 7:00 p.m. tip, will be televised by the YES Network.
