Jason Makrinos, a member of Jerry Schmitt's first recruiting class at Westminster College, rejoins his former coach as co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach.
Makrinos spent the past four seasons at Slippery Rock University where he coached defensive backs and also served as recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator. He was part of a staff that helped SRU to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West championships in 2011 and 2013.
While at Slippery Rock, Makrinos coached six all-PSAC defensive backs, four all-region DBs and one All-American. SRU ranked No. 1 nationally in pass efficiency defense at the end of the 2013 regular season.
Prior to his stint at Slippery Rock, Makrinos spent two seasons on Rich Lackner's staff at Carnegie Mellon where he served as defensive backs coach, assistant recruiting coordinator and strength and conditioning coach.
In his first season at CMU, four defensive backs were named All-University Athletic Association while another earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team. Carnegie Mellon's defense recorded 16 interceptions in 2008.
Makrinos was a graduate defensive assistant at Kent State in 2007 where he helped mentor two cornerbacks who appeared on NFL rosters including Jack Williams, the fourth-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 2008.
Prior to joining the Kent State staff, Makrinos worked with the linebackers and defensive backs at SRU as The Rock's football graduate assistant in 2005 and 2006.
Makrinos, who attended Peters Township High School, played defensive line at Westminster under Schmitt where he earned a spot on the Presidents' Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll and also earned a Collegiate All-American Scholar Award.
Makrinos started his coaching career at his alma mater, in 2004 as a student assistant working with the defensive line as well as helping with recruiting.
Makrinos graduated from Westminster with a degree in psychology in 2005 and completed a master's degree in sports management from Slippery Rock in 2007.
