Duquesne scored on four of its first five possessions to take a 28-0 lead at the half in rolling to a 49-0 home-opening win over Butler. Quarterback Niel Loebig led the way for the Dukes with four touchdown passes including two each to Michel Warfield and Yardon Brantley as the Dukes totaled 535 yards of total offense. The Duquesne defense recorded 11 tackles for loss including three sacks in holding the Bulldogs to 215 total yards. Loebig, who completed 18-of-31 passes for 291 yards in just over three quarters of action, opened the scoring with a 19-yard strike to Warfield to put the Dukes up 7-0 midway through the first quarter. He then found Brantley from 36 yards out to put Duquesne up 14-0. Mike Hilliard, who led all ballcarriers with 78 yards on 14 carries, scampered 35 yards for a score with 8:42 left in the half to up the lead to 21-0 before Brantley ended the first half barrage with a 20-yard touchdown reception. Duquesne's first-half scoring drives took 1:43, 2:05, 2:49 and 1:04 off the clock. Loebig's fourth touchdown pass - a 30-yarder to Warfield - came with 11:49 to go in the game.
Back-up quarterback Ben Palumbo led the Dukes to two late scores - the first coming on a 9-yard pass to Tim Broderick and the last on a 2-yard run by Jeremy McCullough. Warfield topped the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive game with 128 yards on five catches for the Dukes. Brantley added five grabs for 88 yards and Randy Vulakovich also totaled five catches for 71 yards for DU. Butler reached the Duquesne 21-yard line twice in the first half, but missed a pair of 38-yard field goal attempts. The Bulldogs could get no further than the DU 41-yard line in the second half.
Harry Carter led Duquesne with 11 tackles (4 solo). Armando Perez came off the bench to add 9 stops (7 solo) including three tackles for loss. Sophomore tackle Josh Antinopoulos recorded a pair of sacks for the Dukes. Butler quarterback Ian Nelson finished the game 9-of-17 for 97 yards. Justin Campbell and Nelson each rushed for 36 yards on the evening to lead the Bulldogs.
