Dukes Battle Elements for 16-0 Win Over Monmouth
Oct. 29, 2011
Duquesne battled heavy rain and driving winds to capture a 16-0 shutout victory at Monmouth Saturday afternoon. Larry McCoy rushed for 110 yards while Sean Patterson ran for a score and connected with Isaac Spragg through the air for another. Duquesne lit the scoreboard first on its second posession as Patterson ran it in from 19 yards out on a first and 10 for a 6-0 lead. Charlie Leventry's PAT attempt was blocked though as the score held entering the second quarter. McCoy rushed six times for 30 yards on the drive. The Dukes' next score was set up by a Monmouth fumble at its own 37. The Dukes drove 21 yards on eight plays and settled for a 33-yard Leventry field goal to make it 9-0 with 2:04 left in the half. Another MU fumble allowed the Dukes to score again before the half as DU re-gained posession at the Monmouth 13. Two plays later, Patterson found Spragg for an 18-yard touchdown strike to end the day's scoring. The Duquesne defense held Monmouth to 175 total yards, including just 51 through the air. It also forced five fumbles, three of which the Dukes recovered. Khiry Carter had nine tackles (seven solo) as did Horvin Latimer (three solo). Serge Kona made six stops and forced three fumbles. The Red and Blue outgained the Hawks 227-175 as conditions prevented the teams from getting in a groove. Patterson attempted just 15 passes, completing six for 68 yards and a score. He also ran for 35 yards and a touchdown. Spragg was the top receiver with three catches for 42 yards and a score
