Dukes Top Morehead State in OT, 36-33
Nov. 13, 2004
The Duquesne University football team used a landmark performance from quarterback Niel Loebig in defeating visiting Morehead State, 36-33 in overtime.
The Dukes trailed for most of the contest after the Eagles jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead on a 12-yard run by halfback Chris Stockelman and a 57-yard fumble recovery by James Spencer-Howell.
The Red and Blue bounced back however in the second stanza as Loebig connected on two scoring strikes to Michel Warfield to give the Dukes their only lead of regulation at 14-13 with 34 seconds left in the half.
MSU responded quickly though with three passes to the Duquesne 22-yard line, setting up a 39-yard Adam Jones field goal at the horn to take a 16-14 advantage into the lockeroom.
Morehead State opened the second-half scoring on a Dana Calhoun 36-yard touchdown reception from Tyler Cvitkovic to extend its lead to 23-14. The Red and Blue responded as Dan Spriggs caught a nine-yard touchdown pass to pull within three points, but MSU pushed the lead to 10 again as Rick Cornelius scored from the one-yard line to make the score 30-20.
A John Harris 24-yard field goal pulled the Dukes to within seven and set up the game-tying score. Loebig, who needed 286 yards passing and four touchdown passes to be just the fifth QB in NCAA Division I-AA history and 21st player in NCAA history (all levels) to throw for 10,000 career yards and 100 career touchdowns, reached that milestone as he hit Alex Roberson with a three-yard strike with 3:18 remaining to tie the game at 30-30.
In overtime, MSU had the ball first and Jones gave the Eagles a 33-30 lead with a 28-yard field goal, but the Dukes sealed the victory as Loebig hit Roberson again from the two-yard line to give Duquesne the victory.
Loebig finished the day 24-49 for 301 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Jeremy McCullough rushed 24 times for 107 yards. Defensively, Javonn Bradley led DU with 13 tackles followed by Harry Carter with 12.
