Controlled Scrimmage Completes Spring Practice
April 14, 2012
PITTSBURGH - Junior quarterback Marty Mitchell (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) completed 5-of-7 passes for 109 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown to sophomore Randall Coleman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic), to highlight the second team offense in a controlled scrimmage that signified the end of spring practice for the 2012 Duquesne football team.
The scrimmage, which consisted of approximately 40 plays, concluded an afternoon that included one-on-one drills, red zone situations, 7-on-7 passing and 2-minute drills. The first team offense faced the first team defense and the second team offense was matched against the No. 2 defense in the 30-minute scrimmage.
Coleman was the offensive star with 3 catches - all from the right arm of Mitchell - for 96 yards.
Senior quarterback Sean Patterson (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) completed 4-of-5 passes for 25 yards to lead the first team offense which did not score in two series against the first team defense.
First team running back Ryan Ho (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools), who missed last season with an ankle injury suffered in the season opener at Bucknell, led the ground game with 34 yards on 6 carries. Marcus Hughes (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church), who played with both the first and second team offenses, had 14 yards on 6 rushes.
Senior Horvin Latimer (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), a linebacker for the first team defense, had a team-high six tackles including a sack of Patterson.
Sophomore second team linebacker Brett Modic (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) added three tackles. Rich Piekarski (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Toby Thuer (Aliquippa/Hopewell) added sacks for the first and second team defenses respectively.
Senior receiver Anthony Poletti (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) threw a 70-yard scoring pass to sophomore quarterback Zach Nichi (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) on an end around pass late in the scrimmage for the only other score of the afternoon.
"I was really pleased with the effort we received throughout camp," said eighth-year head coach Jerry Schmitt of spring practice which began on March 14. "I think our players picked up where they left off last season and carried it into the spring. I'm looking for them to continue to work hard as they move into off-season conditioning."
Duquesne won its final five games to finish 9-2 and earn a share of the 2011 Northeast Conference title with a 7-1 mark. DU, which returns nine starters, opens the 2012 season at Old Dominion on September 1.
