April 20, 2013

PITTSBURGH - Redshirt freshman Dillon Buechel (McKees Rocks,Pa./Montour) guided the offense to three touchdowns and senior Marty Mitchell (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) led another scoring drive to highlight the offense in a game-situation scrimmage that signified the end of spring practice for the 2013 Duquesne football team.

The 30 minute scrimmage featured the No. 1 offense vs. the No. 2 defense and No. 2 offense vs. the No. 1 defense on alternating possessions.

Buechel, who completed 10-of-14 passes for 103 yards, threw a 5-yard first quarter touchdown passes to Brian Pommerer (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and Tommy Berexa (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) while leading the second offense against the first team defense. He also led a 34 yard second quarter drive while playing with the No. 1 offense that ended with a 2-yard Ryan Ho (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools) touchdown run.

Mitchell, who finished 18-fo-29 for 177 yards, led the second team offense on a 67 yard scoring drive that ended with an 8 yard touchdown pass to running back Marcus Hughes (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) in the second quarter.

The first team defense scored twice in the second half, with cornerback Devin Williams (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) taking in interception 52 yards for a score in the third quarter and linebacker Dorian Bell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway/Ohio State) scooping up a Ho fumble and racing 51 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Brian Hall (District Heights, Md./Gwynn Park) picked off a pair of passes and added 4 tackles for the second team defense. The first pick came on the first play of the game when he stepped in front of a Mitchell pass and took it 36 yards to set up the Buechel-to-Pommerer score. Hall also intercepted Buechel in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore linebacker Christian Kuntz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley), intercepted Mitchell in the end zone on the final play of the first half after Mitchell had driven the second team offense 72 yards to the two. Kuntz finished with four tackles including a sack.

Buechel, who is battling Mitchell to replace three-year starter Sean Patterson at quarterback, completed his first four passes for 32 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior Devin Rahming (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef/Yuba College) led the receivers with 9 catches for 85 yards. Pommerer had 7 catches for 85 yards. Berexa finished with 4 receptions for 41 yards and redshirt freshman Reggie McKnight (Dania, Fla./Hollywood Hills) added four grabs for 45 yards.

Ho led all rushers with 28 yards on 7 carries. Hughes had 18 yards on 7 attempts.

Sophomore linebacker Sam Martello (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) and junior linebacker William Osley (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) had 4 tackles each.

"We had a very competitive camp," said ninth-year head coach Jerry Schmitt. "I was impressed with how hard our kids played. I'm looking forward to getting back to work in August."

DU, which returns 13 starters, opens the 2013 season at home against Albany on August 31.
