STATS FCS Preseason Poll
PITTSBURGH -- The Duquesne football team is receiving 14 votes in the 2017 STATS FCS Preseason Top 25 released today.
The Dukes, coming off their fourth Northeast Conference crown in six seasons in 2016, are one of three NEC teams represented among others receiving votes in the rankings. Saint Francis received 31 votes while Wagner received three.
All told, four of the Dukes' 11 opponents in 2017 appeared in the poll, highlighted by No. 4 South Dakota State, Duquesne's first opponent of the upcoming campaign. The Jackrabbits garnered two first-place votes following their Missouri Valley Conference championship season in 2016.
In addition, Dayton is receiving one vote in the poll. The Dukes will square off with the host Flyers in non-conference action on Sept. 16.
Defending national champion James Madison received 134 of 163 first-place votes to claim the top spot, followed by North Dakota State (19) second, Sam Houston State (7) third, SDSU fourth and Eastern Washington fifth.
A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries select the STATS FCS Top 25. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.
Duquesne opens the season on Thursday, Aug. 31 against the Jackrabbits.
