DUKES HEAD TO INDIANA: Duquesne, coming off a 17-7 win over Dayton last Saturday, concludes the non-conference portion of the schedule against its second Pioneer Football League opponent in as many weeks when it heads to Indiana to face Valparaiso (0-2) on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1:00 p.m. Central Time (WMNY-AM 1360). The Crusaders, who are coming off a 59-0 loss at No. 6 Youngstown State, were picked to finish 10th in the 10-team PFL (Dayton was picked to finish fourth). The Pioneer League is 1-1 against the Northeast Conference this year with Marist's season-opening victory at Bryant (35-10) and Dayton's loss to DU last weekend. Duquesne trailed 7-3 before quarterback Sean Patterson found Gianni Carter with an 18-yard TD pass with 10:01 left. Larry McCoy, who ran for 88 of his 124 yards in the second half, added a 7 yard TD run with 3:03 left to cap an 80 play drive and put the game away. The Dukes, who were in the "others receiving votes" category in the first two Sports Network FCS Top 25 polls, did not receive any votes for the first time this season despite the win over Dayton - who also received votes in last week's poll.

MORE ON VALPO: Valparaiso is in its third season under veteran head coach Dale Carlson ... Carlson, who came to Valpo from Ohio Dominican, is in his 24th season as a head coach ... the Crusaders snapped a 29-game losing streak with a 34-31 home win over Campbell  in last year's home finale ... Valpo showed progress in its season-opening 36-34 home loss to Saint Joseph's, Ind. ... the Crusaders entered the fourth quarter up 34-27 only to see SJC score the game's final nine points including a 6-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left ... Valparaiso totaled 350 yards of total offense, including 221 from the arm of sophomore quarterback Eric Hoffman who completed 23-of-44 passes ... sophomore RB Gabe Ali-El added 84 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries (5.6 ypc.) ... the Crusaders were outgained 524-190 in a 59-0 loss at No. 6 Youngstown State last weekend ... Hoffman completed 28-of-37 passes for 139 yards in the defeat.

DU AND VU: This is the second meeting between the Dukes and Crusaders ... DU defeated Valpo 49-14 at Rooney Field last season ... the Dukes scored on their first four possessions in outgaining Valparaiso 628-188 ... the total yards were the most by a DU team since 647 in a 36-14 win over Siena in 2003 ... Larry McCoy ran for 164 yards in a little over two quarters of action and Bill Bair added 154 yards, giving the Dukes two 150-yard rushers in the same game for the first time since 2001 ... quarterback Sean Patterson was an economical 12-of-18 for 181 yards and three touchdowns in just under three quarters of action  ... DU held Valpo to 26 yards rushing on 27 attempts.

MORE ON THE DUKES: This is Duquesne's fifth season as a scholarship-granting football program and fifth season as an associate member of the Northeast Conference. With the move to the NEC, Duquesne offered 18 scholarships in February of 2008. That number has increased to 32 this season. Duquesne granted only need-based financial aid for football playing student-athletes as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League from 1994 through 2007. The NEC competed as a non-scholarship member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision until 2006 when the conference adopted an athletics-based aid model. This is the third season the NEC regular season champion will be an automatic qualifier for the Division I Football Championship.

IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: Duquesne is 18-15 in non-conference games under eighth-year head coach Jerry Schmitt with wins over Robert Morris (three times prior to joining the NEC), Dayton (three times), Bucknell (twice) and Fordham (twice). At home, the Dukes are 11-2 in non-league play, while on the road Schmitt's Dukes have fashioned a 6-13 mark. DU snapped a seven-game skid in non-conference road games with a 22-13 win at Dayton on Sept. 3, 2011. The win snapped Dayton's FCS-best win streak at 10. DU went 2-1 in non-conference games last season.

DAYTON LEFTOVERS: Duquesne has won five of the past six over Dayton to up its series lead to 6-4 ... Duquesne's eight-game home win streak is its longest since a school record 16 in a row from 2002 into 2004 ... head coach Jerry Schmitt is now 12-2 in non-conference home games ... senior running back Larry McCoy (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) carried 27 times for 124 yards ... it was the 20th 100-yard game of his career ... he needs one more to tie the school record of 21 set by Donte Small from 1998-01 ... McCoy had 88 yards on 18 second half carries ... he needs 179 yards to pass Pedro Bowman (3,830 yards from 1981-84) and move into second place on Duquesne's all-time rushing list ... McCoy's career total stands at 3,652 ... senior quarterback Sean Patterson (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) completed 18-of-26 passes for 187 yards ... he also threw his 48th career touchdown pass leaving him alone in third place on DU's career list ... Patterson also passed Kevin Rombach to move into fourth on DU's all-time list with 365 completions ... Patterson is now tied with Scott Knapp for fourth on Duquesne's all-time passing yardage list with 4,684 ... All-America safety Serge Kona (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led the Dukes with 9 tackles (7 solo) ... he also recorded his fourth career interception, which he returned 13 yards, to end Dayton's final drive ... sophomore cornerback Ben Gartland (Pittsford, N.Y./Sutherland) added 7 tackles and one pass break up ... fellow sophomore cornerback Brandon Martin (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) added 5 tackles and broke up three passes ... sophomore safety Rich Piekarski (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also broke up three passes ... linebacker Dorian Bell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) had 4 tackles, including a sack, and forced a fumble ... DU held Dayton to five conversions on 17 third downs.
