Coaches Corner with head football coach Jerry Schmitt and Ryan Gavatorta
Nov. 15, 2012
This Saturday, the Dukes will conclude the season at league-leading Wagner University. The scenario is simple for Wagner, defeat Duquesne and they secure the NEC crown and NCAA Championship automatic bid.
DU, which trailed 35-7 at the half, outscored Albany 24-3 in the second half in dropping its third consecutive game. Senior Sean Patterson threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another in his final home game. Senior running back Larry McCoy (4,474 career rushing yards), gained 69 yards to pass Wagner's Rick Sarille (4,460 from 1996-99) and become the NEC's No. 2 all-time rusher. McCoy enters Saturday's game needing five yards to become the first three-time 1,000-yard rusher in school history. Patterson (2,183/17) needs three TD passes to join Niel Loebig (2001-04) and Tony Zimmerman (1998-00) as the only signal-callers in school history to post 2,000 yards passing and throw for 20 TDs in three seasons.
