Martello and Quintana Named Capital One Academic All-District

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne sophomores linebacker Sam Martello (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) and defensive lineman Luis Quintana (Miami, Fla./Columbus), who both played integral roles in DU's Northeast Conference co-Championship, have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 2 Football Team.
Martello, an Accounting major with a 3.92 GPA, ranks third on the Dukes (6-4, 4-2) with 63 tackles, including a team-high 34 solo stops. The Ohio native, who has 3.5 tackles for loss with one sack has also picked off a pass and broken up four others. The one-time NEC Defensive Player of the Week is also tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles.
Quintana, who has played in all 10 games, joined the starting lineup in week seven. A finance major with a 3.75 GPA, Quintana has contributed 19 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss.
Martello and Quintana's names, along with those from the other seven districts, will now move on to the national ballot. This year's Capital One Academic All-America team will be announced on Thursday, December 5.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.
Since 1993, a total of 31 Duquesne football players have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Football Team a total of 42 times. The Dukes have had at least one academic all-district honoree in 16 of the past 21 years.
