Duquesne's men's soccer team opened the 2012 campaign on a high note, taking down Howard, 4-0 Friday evening in day one action of the Duquesne Invitational at Rooney Field.

The tone was set early as Simon Gomez took a long pass from Austin Lange in the ninth minute and outran the defenders along the right side of the field and beat the goalkeeper for an early 1-0 lead which held up at halftime. The Dukes, who outshot the Bison 15-3 in the game had a 7-0 shots advantage in the first half.

Early in the second stanza, Gomez factored in another DU score as he set up Joshua Patterson in the 48th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Play went back and forth for the next 16 minutes before Colin Phillips fired a shot on goal which was saved by the Howard keeper, but Karter Sell followed the play nicely, grabbing the rebound and burying it into the back of the net for a 3-0 score in the 64th minute.

The game's scoring ended in the 79th minute as pinpoint passes from Julio Perez and Alex Healion set up Matt Essig with his first career goal.

Sasa Miskovic and Sam Frymier combined for the shutout in goal as coach Jake Ouimet used 18 different players in the contest.

The Dukes return to action on Sunday as they host Niagara at 2:00 pm. The game will follow an 11:30 match-up between Pitt and Howard. Prior to DU's victory on Friday, Pitt and Niagara played to a 1-1 tie as the Panthers sent the game into OT with a goal off a corner kick with four seconds remaining in regulation.
