Men's Soccer Takes Season Opener with 3-0 Win Over Longwood

Duquesne's men's soccer team scored slightly more than two minutes into their season opener and cruised to a 3-0 victory over visitng Longwood Friday evening on Rooney Field.
Alex Healion headed in a Ryan Merrifield cross in the third minute to capture the early lead. Karter Sell followed 17 minutes later, taking a steal for a break-away, juking the keeper and placing the ball into an empty net.
The Lancers had several chances to score, including a shot that hit the cross bar in the first half. Duquesne keeper Sam Frymier, however posted his first shutout of the season, making four saves.
In the second half, the Dukes made it 3-0 as Josh Ellis hit the cross bar, but still managed to get it across the goal line off assists from Healion and Isiah Noreiga.
The Red and Blue were outshot, 14-8, but made the most of their opportunities. Longwood also led in corner kicks, 8-5.
The Dukes return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 as they host Oakland at 3:00 pm on Rooney Field.
